Silver King Euonymus (Euonymus japonicus 'Silver King')

Silver King Euonymus is a bright broadleaf evergreen shrub valued for its glossy green leaves, creamy white margins, and dependable year-round structure. Its upright habit gives foundation beds, hedges, screens, containers, and mixed borders a polished look through every season. The silver-white variegation brings clean contrast to the landscape without relying on flowers, making it useful near entries, along walkways, and in evergreen planting combinations. With full sun to partial shade, well-drained soil, and occasional shaping, Silver King Euonymus provides steady foliage color and structure for managed landscapes.

Distinctive Features

Silver King Euonymus forms a dense upright evergreen shrub with glossy green leaves edged in creamy white to pale yellow-white. The foliage is the main ornamental feature, creating a crisp, high-contrast look against darker evergreens, flowering shrubs, perennials, and hardscape materials. Small greenish white flowers may appear in spring to early summer, but they are not showy and are usually secondary to the foliage. With age, the plant can develop into a substantial upright shrub that works well as a hedge, screen, foundation anchor, or large container specimen when given enough room.

Growing Conditions

  • Sun: Grows best in full sun to partial shade, with brighter light supporting strong variegation and dense growth.
  • Soil: Adapts to average, well-drained soil and performs best where roots are not kept in constantly wet conditions.
  • Water: Water regularly during establishment, then provide supplemental water during extended dry periods to keep foliage healthy and full.
  • USDA Zones: Hardy in USDA Zones 6 to 9, with winter protection helpful in exposed sites near the colder edge of its range.
  • Mature Size: Typically reaches about 6 to 10 feet tall and 4 to 6 feet wide in cultivation, with larger size possible in favorable conditions.
  • Habit: Forms a dense, upright to rounded broadleaf evergreen shrub with a full, bushy outline.

Ideal Uses

  • Focal Point: Use as a bright evergreen focal point in foundation beds, entry plantings, mixed borders, or courtyard gardens where silver-white variegation can stand out year-round.
  • Foundation Planting: Plant near larger foundations where an upright evergreen shrub can add structure, color, and height without relying on seasonal flowers.
  • Hedge: Grow as a clipped or informal hedge where dense evergreen foliage and crisp variegation are desired.
  • Screening: Use in mild-climate screens or property-edge plantings where a medium evergreen shrub can provide coverage and color.
  • Container Planting: Grow in large decorative containers where its glossy white-edged foliage can brighten patios, porches, and entryways.

Low Maintenance Care

  • Watering: Water deeply during the first growing season to establish roots, then water during prolonged dry spells as needed.
  • Mulching: Apply a light mulch layer around the root zone to conserve moisture and reduce weed competition while keeping mulch away from the stems.
  • Pruning: Prune lightly in spring or after flushes of growth to maintain size, shape the plant, or encourage a denser habit.
  • Reversion Control: Remove any solid green shoots promptly so the silver-white variegation remains the dominant feature.
  • Fertilizing: Fertilize only when needed in spring based on soil conditions, using a moderate approach that avoids excessive soft growth.
  • Winter Care: Site out of harsh winter wind where possible to reduce foliage burn in colder or more exposed landscapes.

Why Choose Silver King Euonymus?

  • Bright Variegation: Displays glossy green leaves with creamy white margins for clean year-round foliage contrast.
  • Evergreen Structure: Provides dependable density, shape, and screening value through every season.
  • Versatile Placement: Works well as a foundation shrub, hedge, screen, specimen, container plant, or mixed-border accent.
  • Easy Shaping: Responds well to pruning, making it useful in both formal and informal landscape designs.
  • Bold Contrast: Pairs well with dark evergreens, flowering shrubs, perennials, and neutral hardscape materials for a polished planting design.

Silver King Euonymus is an excellent choice for gardeners who want evergreen structure with crisp, reliable foliage color. Its glossy white-edged leaves, dense upright habit, adaptable growth, and flexible landscape use make it a strong option for foundations, hedges, screens, containers, and mixed borders where year-round contrast matters.

I’ve had these shoes for a few months now. When I first got them, they were very painful to wear. I was wearing them pretty much every day but found them to be extremely tight. I thought perhaps the shoe just had to “stretch“ and conform to the shape of my foot, so I decided to give them a few weeks to do that. After a few weeks, they were still somewhat painful to wear. It was only until just within the last month or so that they have become painless to wear. So please be aware that you might find the shoes to be very uncomfortable when you first get them. Give them a chance to stretch and adapt to the shape and contours of your feet, though. The shoes are extremely lightweight and very flexible and bendable. They almost seem cheap in that regard, so I’m not sure what to make of that. I’ve never had a pair of shoes like this that were so flexible. I’m used to having a hard, rigid sole and an inflexible upper. The shoes do look very nice and seem to be holding up well. People have complained in their reviews that the stitching at the back on the heel comes undone. I haven’t noticed that with mine — yet. That is the only part of the shoe that doesn’t seem to be designed very well. Why put stitching in such a precarious place on the shoe? This is the first shoe I have ever seen that has stitching on the heel like that. But, as I mentioned, my stitching is NOT coming undone like many others have reported. PROS: 1) The shoe seems to fit comfortably after a couple months of extreme discomfort. Still not the most comfortable shoe overall, though 2) The shoe looks nice! CONS: 1) The shoes seemed very tight when I first got them and stayed that way for a couple of months thus ensuring extreme discomfort and pain when walking in them. 2) The stitching in the heel is a bad design! 3) Due to the shoes being extremely lightweight and flexible, they almost seem cheaply made. RECOMMENDED WITH HESITANCE

Nice-looking shoes
Size: 7.5, Color: B-black
I really like the look of these shoes. They can be worn for more casual look or more dressy look. When I first tried them on I considered returning them because they were a little tight in the width. I wore them for the first time today. After only 2-3 hours of wearing them I could tell that they stretched some and weren’t so tight across my toes. They were comfortable too. I am generally not hard on shoes so hoping they will hold up well.
